Let’s face it. Finding the perfect foundation can be tricky, especially for those of us gifted with more melanin.
We’ve been “matched” into the wrong shade by professionals and ourselves for years. However, it doesn’t have to be this way. Of course, the easiest way to find your perfect shade is to come into the co-op to be matched, however here are a couple of tips to help you if you don’t have the time.
1. Shop with a brand that carries a large selection of foundation in your shade range
The more options there are, the more likely you will be able to find your true shade without having to mix. This means that only 5 shades of brown isn’t going to cut it.
2. Choose the right finish
Your skin type affects what type of foundation is best for you. Typically, you hear that matte is best for oily skin while a dewy look is better for dry skin. However, there are ways to break out of this dichotomy without looking cakey or wet. It all comes down to how you prep your skin.
3. Match to your jawline
Your face and neck often aren’t the same color. Since your face is going to be covered it is best to match to your jawline for a seamless and skin-like look.
4. Apply foundation in bright, natural lighting
This will give you the best idea of what the shade really looks like.
5. ALWAYS try before you buy.
Foundation needs time to set into your skin (and possibly oxidize) before it shows its true color. The best way to do find your perfect shade is to try it on and wear it for a couple of hours to see how it matches.
